會議緣起
成立一個「東亞科技與社會網路」會可能有什麼樣功能與貢獻呢？也許聽來會有一點矛盾，今年十月臺、日、韓三國學者將齊聚臺北二日，目的就在探索組織這樣一個跨國學術網路的可能功能、意義、與努力方向。在過去三年中，臺灣、日本、韓國、與中國的「科技與社會」研究學者，已曾先後在北京、漢城、與神戶舉辦過三次會議，嚐試為同屬東亞地區的STS學者間創造出更多的互動、合作、相互學習的機會。在教育部顧問室的大力支持之下，今年十月份將由我國STS社群擔任地主，延續上述的努力，而在臺北舉辦「東亞科技與社會」國際會議。
Origin
What purpose can be served by establishing an East Asian STS Network? It might sound a little paradoxical that next August, STS scholars from three countries will convene in Taipei to explore the possible uses and value of constructing such a scholarly network. Over the past three years, STS scholars from Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China have cooperated in organizing three East Asian STS Conferences in Beijing, Seoul and Kobe. These conferences have aimed to bring together East Asian STS scholars to create opportunities for them to interact, cooperate and learn from each other. With the generous support of the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, the Taiwanese STS community has the privilege to continue this collective endeavor by hosting the East Asian STS Conference in Taipei in the summer of 2003.
